Royal octavo, original red cloth, elaborate gilt decoration on front cover, including names of the players, joints repaired, some staining to back cover, some edge wear, otherwise good. pp (iv), lvi, 371. 296 games annotated by Zukertort, Steinitz, Mason and Bird. Includes details of the preliminary proceedings, opening banquet, subscribers to the tournament and prize money etc.. An impressive tournament book. LN 5216.
On the leaf opposite the title-page there is an inscription from H.E.Bird - "To Andrew Chatto, Esq., with The Bird's Kindest Regards and Best Wishes, November 30th 1883." Books inscribed by Bird are rare. There are also two other inscriptions as shown in the photo.
