DESCRIPTION

"240 SCHACHAUFGABEN"

von W. A. Shinkmann (1903)

Weiss, Max: "240 Schachaufgaben von W. A. Shinkman in Grand-Rapids". Gesammelt von Max Weiss, Rechtsanwalt Bamberg.

Potsdam, A. Stein's Verlagsbuchhandlung, (1903). Beautiful original publisher cloth edition, with the top outer edge of the pages tinted red. Portrait frontispiece + Title page + VI unnumbered pages (Einleitung) + 159 pages. 21,2 x 14 cm. In German.

Very good to excellent: Insignificant, barely noticeable defects: some very light and barely visible rubbing on the covers, some slight browning on the inside edges of the covers and safeguards, and very small stains (specks) on the outer lateral edges and also on the bottom of the pages. The spine fades, causing a darkening of the Title on the spine. Ex-libris (inside front cover) from former owner, Italian collector Mr. Pellegrini. In first 177 problems have the solution (just the initial move. In very few, maybe 5-6, there is a somewhat more extensive written solution) written with a pencil (easily erasable). Inside in very good to excellent condition. Honestly, I think it is a copy in excellent condition and very pleasant in the hands.

L/N 2563; Kieler Schachkatalog 7387.

Once again, my thanks to Karel Mokry for the description on italic shown below:

"William A. Shinkman, 1847 Liberec, todays Czechia - 1933 Grand Rapid, Michigan, USA, was one of the most significant US composers.

The book contains 240 Shinkman’s problems - 48 twomover, 85 thremovers, 35 fourmovers, 9 manymovers, 58 selfmates and 5 others."

Together with his contemporary Samuel Loyd, he was the most famous chess composer in the USA in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His work includes over 3500 compositions, making him one of the most productive composers ever. 672 of them are contained in the collection "The golden argosy" published in 1929 by Alain Campbell White. The preface of this book comes from Shinkman's nephew Otto Wurzburg, who was also an important composer. This interesting information can be seen in the following ARVES link, in which there is also a photo of Shinkmann and a selection of 15 of his problems: https://www.arves.org/arves/index.php/en/halloffame/549-shinkman-william-1847-1933
