Baird, Edit : Seven Hundred Chess Problems.

With 1 portrait and 700 two-color diagrams. Approximately 215 unnumbered leaves. Original blue cloth with gilted side panels, chess motif decoration on front cover and gilt title on spine. 

"630 direct mates (286 two-movers; 315 three-movers; 24 four-movers; 5 five-movers) and 70 self-mates, with solutions at the end... The text is printed in blue, the diagrams in blue and red." (Betts) L/N 2549. Betts 33 - 5.

Edith Helen Baird (1859-1924) of England, born Winter Wood (known as Mrs. W.J. Baird), is the most famous female chess composer. She published her problems using the name "Mrs W. J. Baird." She composed over 2,000 problems. In 1902 she wrote 700 Chess Problems, which took her 14 years to complete.  In 1907, she wrote The Twentieth Century Retractor (take a move back to make a stronger move to mate or win the game), which was full of Shakespeare quotes.

Condition: This book is in a sorry state. Spine defect. Shelf lean. Crack inside at gutter. This book needs a rebinding.
