by Jean Dufresne, Leipzig 1889
inscribed by master and chess composer Jan Kotrc
Dufresne, Jean: Das Buch der Schachmeisterpartien.
Leipzig, Philipp Reclam jun., (1889). Orig. cloth. 203, (5) pages + 32 pages publisher’s catalogue. Inscribed by J. Vesely and Jan Kotrc on front free endpaper. Small size 14x10 cm. 150 grams. In German. LN 3173
Fair: some wear to spine ends, edges a little rubbed. Stamp of previous owner on title (Samuel Mikulka). Inscription on front free endpaper. Internally OK, text with no writings.
The book contains 74 annotated games. This is the first book in a series that was later continued by Jacques Mieses.
There are two inscriptions on front free endpaper:
1) from J. Vesely, to unknown person, dated 22/8 1897. It is possible that J. Vesely is the Czech chess player Josef Vesely, 1862-1908, see Gaige: Chess Personalia, p.444.
2) from J. Kotrc, to unknown person (Samuel Mikulka?), undated (around 1900). 22/8 1897. The Czech text means: 1st prize in the group tournament of the Congress of Czech chess players. From the organizers.
Biographical data:
Jan (Johann) Kotrc (1862-1943), Czech master and problem composer. Founder of the first Czech printed chess magazine Ceske listy sachove (1896-99). He lived 40 years in Vienna from ca 1900. Karel Traxler's brother-in-law.
Note: sending to the UK is now somewhat problematic. If you are from the UK and want to bid, please email me first.
