DESCRIPTION

Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond 1893+1894

complete volumes 1+2 bound together

signed and with notes by Meindert Niemeijer(?)

LN 6203

Tijdschrift van den Nederlandschen Schaakbond 1893 + 1894.

Amsterdam, 1893-1894. Contemporary common hardcover with no lettering. Size 24 cm. The weight 680 grams. LN 6203. In Dutch.

1893: numbers 1-12: 156 pages. Title and Index not issued.

1894: title, index, nos 1-12: (2), VI + 252p. (Index is common for 1893 and 1894)

Fair: edges a little/somewhat rubbed. Remains of old paper label on spine. Stamp of previous owner on the front paste-down (= chess composer and collector Ilja Mikan) is overlaid with a paper sticker. Signature and pencil notes on endpapers (pictures 6, 7). Title page a little soiled. In the problem section, there are occasional neat notes in pen or crayon in Mikan's hand. Also, a few pen notes in other hand. The front and rear free endpapers are shortened (pictures) but not additionally cut off. This is a private binding and this is how the binding was made. Internally normal signs of use but overall okay.

There is the date 25/9 1931 and the signature of the previous owner in pencil on the front pastedown. A note on the front pastedown notes that the title page for the first volume may not have been issued, and the back pastedown shows the price for the set of volumes 1893-1932. It is possible that Ilja Mikan bought a set of these magazines at the time - his chess and collecting career began in the early 1930s. The signature on the front pastedown could belong to Dr. Meindert Niemeijer, but I leave the assessment to you.

Both volumes are complete. The magazine was checked page by page. No plates were published in these volumes, the covers are not bound in.

The title page for the second year (as noted above, there was no title page for the first year) is at the beginning of the volume, the common index for years I + II is at the end.
