Prokes, Ladislav. Dr. Karel Treybal. Zivot a dilo ceskeho sachoveho mistra. Praha, A. Neubert, 1946. In Czech. 202 pages, 2 leaves. LN 3136.
The Life and Work of the Czech Chess Master. A Biography of Karel Treybal with 168 annotated games, several photos (of lower quality), an index of opponents and openings.
Karel Treybal (1885-1941) was a Czech chess master, member of Czechoslovak chess national team and silver medallist at the 1933 Chess Olympiad in Folkestone. At the 1923 Carlsbad tournament, he led for a long time, defeating Alekhine, Nimzowitsch, and Spielmann, but after a weaker finish, he ended up in 6th-7th place. He was not a fighter, played amicably, and was almost always willing to accept a draw, often depriving himself of valuable half-points. Treybal was not a chess professional; he worked as a judge. On October 2, 1941, he was executed by the Nazis for alleged illegal possession of firearms.
A small interesting fact: Bobby Fischer once asked Lubosh Kavalek if he could get him this book about Treybal.
