Geza Maroczy was born on March 3, 1875, in Szeged and passed away on May 29, 1951, in Budapest. He began writing his memoirs in the last decade of his long life, intending to capture memories of the beginning of his career and the period of his greatest glory, which ended in 1908, in three parts. He published the first two volumes in his own edition: in 1942 under the title Így kezdtem (This Is How I Started) and in 1943 under the title Világversenyek élén - I. rész (At the Forefront of World Tournaments - Part I), covering events up to the end of 1903. In the latter volume, he also hinted that he would soon release a continuation covering the next eight years, but this plan could not be realized due to the increasing hardships of the war years. The final part remained in manuscript form. This book covers the first two parts of Maróczy's biography, supplemented by manuscript data up to the 1908 tournament in Prague.
