Description

Forster Richard, Negele Michael and Tischbierek Raj. Emanuel Lasker. 3 volumes. Berlin, Exzelsior, 2018 - 2022. In English. XIII, 450; XI, 452; XI, 468 pages. Original cloth binding with gilt-stamped title on front cover and spine. Weight 2,6 kg.

Volume I: Struggle and Victories, World Chess Champion for 27 years.

Volume II: Choices and Chances. Chess and other Games of the Mind.

Volume III: Labors and Legacy. Chess, Philosophy, and Psychology.

A monumental and, in the future, hardly surpassable three-volume monograph on Emanuel Lasker.

The volumes explore his family background, recount Lasker's life full of struggles and unprecedented victories. The second volume covers the middle period of Lasker's chess career, the circumstances of his retirement from chess, his involvement in various other intellectual games, and his time in Holland. The third and final volume presents the later part of Lasker's life from 1914 onwards, highlighting his diverse ambitions and writings in chess and various scientific disciplines.

The biographical narrative unfolds against the backdrop of dramatic events in Germany, leading up to Lasker’s escape. Additionally, one chapter focuses on Lasker’s chess successes in Soviet Russia. The account is enriched with a large number of rare and, in some cases, previously unpublished photographs.

Condition - Very Good: only slight signs of use.
