Description

Willard Fiske – vinur Íslands og velgjörðamaður (2008).

About the book

Few have had such a strong belief in Iceland and Icelanders as the American Daniel Willard Fiske. In the mid-19th century, he, then a young man, became intensely interested in Iceland. He learned Icelandic and stayed in Iceland for a while in 1879.

He believed that Iceland had a very bright future, only that it needed to take action. He met a number of people, many of whom later helped him collect Icelandic literature. His love affairs were sweet, but he married a very wealthy girl who died after a short marriage. A hard-earned inheritance from her enabled him to collect Icelandic books with passion, which became the most significant of his life's work and forms the basis of the Fiske Icelandic Collection at Cornell University in the United States.

This book paints a solid picture of the complex personality of a man who wanted to enrich the lives of Icelanders and improve their well-being.
