Starts In remaining
This chess variant emerged around the 1200s and continued to be played in German-speaking regions, notably in Ströbeck. It is played on a 12×8 board, adding pieces like the “Kurier” (an ancestor of today’s bishop), “Alfil,” “Mann,” and “Schleich” among others. The town of Ströbeck kept the variant alive well into the 19th century and is known for hosting a courier chess contest in 1885.
