Description

Harrie Grondijs’ London 1883 is a beautifully crafted historical work that delves into the legendary London 1883 chess tournament, one of the most significant events of its era. Rather than simply recounting games and results, Grondijs takes a unique approach: he compiles and presents letters written by Wilhelm Steinitz, originally published in the journal Turf, Field and Farm, spanning the years 1882–1884.

These letters offer a vivid, first-hand perspective on the preparations, atmosphere, and aftermath of the tournament, including the early tensions that would eventually lead to the first official World Chess Championship match between Steinitz and Zukertort. Grondijs enriches the narrative with biographical notes on the twelve main competitors, adding depth and context to the personalities behind the board.

The book was published in 2010 in a limited edition of just 40 signed and numbered copies, making it a rare collector’s item. It’s a treasure for those who appreciate chess history told through the voices of its protagonists.

With numerous text illustrations and diagrams, some in color. 309 pages. Original gray cloth with illustrated dust jacket. (59) * No. 22 of 40 copies, numbered and signed by Harrie Grondijs.

Condition: Hardcover with a dust jacket. Near fine.
