George WALKER, The Art of Chess-Play: New Treatise on the Game of Chess.
London, 1846, fourth edition, 380 pag., hard covers.
Golden gilted front cover and spine. On front cover is engraved a chess table and floral motives are engraved on both front and back hard covers. On spine is gilted: „Walker on Chess”.
Are the hard covers originals? Very possible YES in my opinion, coroborated with the information mentioned below about the inside part of the spine.
On title page there is dedication and signature which I consider to be Walker’s: „George Walker (the author) [to] Charles Gregory, Esq.”.
The hard covers are detached from the block of pages (well glued!), but - surprize! - on inside part of the spine there is another hand-written dedication, something like this: „To A.B. // We are Sir // Your most ob... and Serv... // Marshall [and ?] Stafford [?]” – (Maybe you can decipher better!). This text may also be the (last) part of a letter of that time, when the book was printed.
Pages are in a good condition, somewhat yellowed due to time, but many pages are still uncut, so not used!
