Description

"CHESS, Sutton Coldfield. Volume 13" edited by B.H. Wood. Published in brown hardback by 'CHESS, Sutton Coldfield' in 1948. 292 large pages. Includes index. The volume contains all twelve issues of this iconic magazine for the dates of Oct 1947 - Sept 1948 (Issue Numbers 145 to 156, inclusive). The volume is in Good Minus condition for its age. The binding is good (not "tight" as there is a some movement to the spine area) and there is no shelf lean or bowing present. The boards are clean but with a part-ring of a tea cup and a couple of light speck stains to note as depredations plus a speckling discolouration that can be seen "in the light". The gilt lettering on the spine has faded completely away but can just be read "in the light". There is mild evidence of dried liquid staining to the first 50 or so pages but this is only to a small area at the foot of the magazines. The page edge blocks are heavily tanned. Internally the volume is in Good Minus condition and appears to inscription and annotation free. The internal pages are clean and generally unmarked but age-tanned due to the poorer quality of paper available so soon after WW2. Several internal pages have the often seen vertical crease from the magazine having been in the postal system, back in the day. Several pages have creases and signs of use by a previous owner. There is a stamp on the front & rear endpapers and the front endpaper (see scan). The volume feels a little fragile. Games are given in English descriptive notation. Condition Rating: 5.5/10. Any questions, please just ask.
