Prazsky carodej (The sorcerer of Prague)

Collection of chess problems by Dr. Zdenek Mach

Private handwritten book with 258 problems by the author

(Praha, ca 1940s)

Mach, Zdenek: Prazsky carodej (The sorcerer of Prague). Sbirka uloh Dr. Zdenka Macha.

No place and date (Praha, between 1942-1954). Contemporary hardcover. Unpaginated (cca 480 pages). Size ca 11.5 x 13.5 cm. The weight 300 grams. In Czech.

Good to very good: old blank paper sticker on spine. Light signs of use, no flaws.

A manuscript by the author, in which he recorded 258 of his best problems. Each problem includes a stamped diagram, the place and date of its first publication, and the solution.

The problems are arranged chronologically, starting from 1895. The last problem appeared in the Nymburske listy on November 6, 1942.

Zdenek Mach died in 1954, so this book must have been created sometime between 1942 and 1954.

This is the first time this manuscript has come to light. Its existence was previously unknown, and it has never been published in book form.

Dr. Zdenek Mach (1877-1954), was Czech problem composer, one of the leading representatives of the Bohemian chess problem school, long-year editor of several chess columns – Svetozor, Zlata Praha etc. Author of ca 500 problems.
