Löffler. Die Story von Jan und Nigel.
1992 was a memorable year for chess. Anatoly Karpov dropped out of the Candidates' Race and Bobby Fischer returned to the board for Serbia. "Mephisto" wanted to avoid his gambling debts and the World Championship in North America fell through. The chess world desperately needed heroes but neglected them. Jan Timman from Amsterdam and Nigel Short from London qualified for the Candidates' Final, two players whose horizons do not end at the four corners of the chessboard and who are worth discovering.
Stefan Löffler, Berlin IM candidate and chess journalist (Süddeutsche Zeitung, taz, Tagesanzeiger, etc.) visited and interviewed Timman and Short, traced their development and dissected their games. The challenger will only be an outsider at the 1993 World Chess Championship, but by no means as hopeless as Kasparov hastily claimed. The world champion's 23 defeats, presented here for the first time in full, show that Kasparov is his own worst enemy.
