Description

Mannheim 1914.

Group photo from tournament. The photo shows the participants of the tournament. 14cm*9cm.

The Mannheim 1914 chess tournament was part of the 19th Congress of the German Chess Federation and took place in Mannheim, Germany, in July and August 1914. It featured many of Europe’s top players, including Alexander Alekhine, Siegbert Tarrasch, Frank James Marshall, and Efim Bogoljubov. The event was dramatically interrupted by the outbreak of World War I, which led to its premature end. At the time the tournament was stopped, Alekhine was leading the field, followed closely by Vidmar and Spielmann. Many of the Russian participants were interned in Germany when the war began, though some, including Alekhine, were later released. The Mannheim tournament is remembered as a promising event cut short by history, marking the sudden break between the pre-war and post-war eras of international chess.

Condition: Original photo. Minor bruises. From David DeLucia's library.
