Description

A Sketchbook of American Chess Problematists is a seminal two-volume work first published in 1942 by The Overbrook Press in Stamford, Connecticut. Compiled by renowned chess composer Alain Campbell White, along with Edgar William Allen and Burney Means Marshall, this limited edition set is a cornerstone in the history of American chess composition.

The two volumes contain 166 chess problems, primarily direct mates in two or three moves, composed by 84 American problemists. Each problem is accompanied by a brief biography of the composer and an analysis of their contributions to chess problem composition.

The work offers a continuous historical narrative of chess problem composition in the United States since 1845. It highlights the contributions of notable composers such as Sam Loyd, W. Shinkman, and Orestes Brownson, and includes a survey of Brownson's influential yet scarce chess magazine.

Condition: Fine. Duodecimo (6¾" x 4¾"), bound in beige cloth with brown lettering on the spine, and accompanied by original onion skin wrappers and a slipcase. From David DeLucia's Chess Library.
