Karlsbad 1929, Tournament program. 4 pages, folded. 30 cm * 23 cm. A handwritten letter from Victor Tietz (the organizer and chairman for the Karlsbader Schachklub) to Herman Helms, is laid in.
The Karlsbad 1929 chess tournament, held in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia, from August 30 to October 29, was one of the strongest events of the interwar period. It brought together twenty-two leading masters, including José Raúl Capablanca, Rudolf Spielmann, Efim Bogoljubov, Akiba Rubinstein, and Salo Flohr. The tournament was won by Aarón Nimzowitsch with 15 points out of 21, narrowly ahead of Capablanca and Spielmann. His victory was seen as a major triumph for the hypermodern school of chess, which emphasized control of the center with distant pieces rather than direct occupation. The event is remembered for its high-quality strategic play and as one of the last great classical tournaments before the disruptions of the 1930s and World War II.
Condition: Program and letter have folds and minor tears. From David DeLucia's Library.
