Description

Twiss (Richard.)): Chess. G.G.J. & J.Robinson, 1787 & 1789. 2 volumes bound in 1, contemporary dark brown leather, the spine is elaborately gilt-tooled, a small crack to the upper joint, a very nice copy. Engraved title-page and engraved plate to each volume, pp ii, errata slip,194, xv, errata page, 272.

"A compilation of all the Anecdotes and Quotations that could be found relative to the Game of Chess; with an Account of all the Chess-Books which could be procured." An invaluable work for the history of the game in the 18th century, and of Philidor's life in particular.  Vol.1 includes the first appearance in book-form of Benjamin Franklin's "The Morals of Chess." The two volumes were published separately, each complete in itself, but the second volume is much the scarcer. The work was published anonymously. LN 4543.
