Greco, Gioachino. Le jeu des eschets, Traduit de l'Italien de Gioachino Greco, Calabrois. A Paris, Chez Jacques Le Febvre Imprimeur Libraire, rue S. Severin, à la Pomwme d'Or, & au Soleil d'or. 1707. With title vignette and a few ornamental elements in text. 1 white, title page, 13 leaves, 343 pages, 1 white leaf. Brown marbled calfskin from 18th century with rich gilt on spine. Van der Linde I, 363; L/N 401; Schmid, pp. 184 ff.
This edition contains extensively documented games in the first book, and "Other ways of playing the Gambit" in the second book. Greco was the strongest chess master of the 17th century, born around 1600 in Calabria and died in 1634 in the Antilles. He invented "magnificent" combinations that are still known today (Greco's Sacrifice - Greco's Checkmate). Through faulty play by his opponents, Greco was often able to demonstrate his art. His chess book initially existed only in manuscript form; the first English translation appeared in 1656 and was subsequently printed in many languages over the centuries. "This work is indisputably one of the most excellent and at the same time most instructive works on the game of chess. It contains approximately 150 highly witty... games without annotations... The conclusion consists of six endgames..." (Schmid)
