Our Folder - The Good Companion Chess Problem Club 1918/19 + 1919/20
complete volumes VI + VII
(bound in one book, with number 10 of volume VI free enclosed)
LN 6412, Betts 42-2
Our Folder - The Good Companion Chess Problem Club 1918/19 + 1919/20.
Philadelphia, 1918-1920. Later halfcloth, spine lettered. 290 + 316 pages (10 + 10 issues). Size ca 21.5 cm. The weight 1,420 grams. LN 6412. Betts 42-2. Di Felice 1053.
The book is Good plus: binding is tight. Stamp of previous owner (chess composer and collector Ilja Mikan) on front paste-down. Small neat marks in pencil or red crayon in the problem section. Text is clean, with light signs of use. In volume 7, one sheet is misbound: pages.13/14 are bound between pp.28-29 (but nothing is missing). The loosely enclosed Issue 1 of Volume VI is Fair: soiled covers, some general wear.
Complete volumes VI (1918/19) + VII (1919/20). Title/indexes not issued. No plates were published in these volumes.
Also inbound:
a) „The Magee Theme“, 4 pages: bound in volume VI. between numbers 5 and 6.
b) „The Good Companion Vocabulary,“ 12 pages: bound in volume VI, after no.9.
At the end of volume VI, there are five blank sheets bound in. The book was probably bound at a time when the owner did not have issue 10 of volume VI available. The blank sheets are probably there so that they can be removed later and replaced with the missing issue 10.
I think that in our case, you could have this corrected by a bookbinder, and the loose issue 10 could be bound into the book.
The magazine was published in Philadelphia from November 1913 to August 1924. The editor was James F. Magee Jr. Among leading persons of the magazine was Alain C. White
It deals mainly with problems and also contains articles on the history of chess.
These two volumes include:
- 800+ problems (numbered 1830-2681) including results of various problem tournaments
- many photos
- articles on Caissa, Bonus Socius, William Shakespeare etc.
The magazine was checked page by page.
