The USA–USSR Chess Match of 1954 was a landmark team event held in New York City, marking the first official chess encounter between the two nations during the Cold War. Each side fielded ten top players, including Samuel Reshevsky and Reuben Fine for the U.S., and Mikhail Botvinnik and Vasily Smyslov for the USSR. The Soviet team won convincingly with a score of 20–12, showcasing their growing dominance in world chess.
