Description

Twenty Years of the Rice Gambit. In Memoriam Isaac Leopold Rice. New York, American Chess Bulletin, 1916. 399 pages with 8 illustrations, 1 folded chart. LN 1871. Betts 15 - 14. Original green cloth binding with gilt title on spine.

History and analysis of the Rice Gambit: 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Nf3 g5 4.h4 g4 5.Ne5 Nf6 6.Bc4 d5 7.exd5 Bd6 8.0-0 (instead of the usual 8.d4). The gambit was invented by the wealthy German-born American businessman Isaac Rice toward the end of the 19th century. He sponsored numerous theme tournaments in which the position after 8.0-0 served as the starting point for every game. Many leading players of the time were among the participants. So fascinated was Rice with his pet line that in 1904 he founded The Rice Gambit Association at his home in New York. With Dr. Lasker as secretary, the Association even published a book containing all the games played in those theme tournaments.

Condition - Good: binding slightly rubbed in several places along the edges. Traces of a removed label on the inner side of the front cover. Several pages with minor creases at the top.
