Description

Game score written in A.E. Santasiere’s hand, with his annotations, Santasiere vs Bobby Fischer. West Orange Log Cabin Championship, 1957.

The 1957 West Orange Log Cabin Championship, officially called the Log Cabin Open, was held at the Log Cabin Chess Club in West Orange, New Jersey, a venue founded and sponsored by chess patron Elliott Forry Laucks. The tournament attracted more than sixty participants and featured many of the top regional players of the time. Saul Wanetik of Philadelphia won the event, while a young Bobby Fischer, then only thirteen years old, finished in the upper group of the standings, tied for places around sixth to fourteenth. Although Fischer did not win a prize, his strong performance against experienced players marked an important early step in his rise through American chess that year, preceding his victories in the U.S. Junior and U.S. Open Championships.
