Group photo from tournament. Attractive original photo, 19cm x 30cm, of the participants from Leipzig, 1879.

The first congress of the Deutscher Schachbund (DSB) was held in Leipzig in July 1879, by which time the organisation had grown to include some sixty-two member clubs. The master tournament featured twelve participants. It was won by the Austrian master Berthold Englisch, ahead of Louis Paulsen and Adolf Schwarz. The event marked a milestone in German-organised competitive chess, laying groundwork for subsequent congresses.
