The Russian chess master and composer Ilya Shumov (1819–1881) was an officer in the Russian Baltic Fleet and worked in the Ministry of the Navy. He was considered one of the strongest Russian chess players of his time and played several matches against Urusov, Janisch, Vinaver, and Petrov. In 1869, he was involved in the founding of the St. Petersburg Chess Society. Shumov created approximately 200 chess compositions, some with entertaining or political undertones. The present edition is the first Russian book on chess problems. Text in Russian and French.
