"The first part is a reprint of Kling and Horwitz's 'Chess Studies' ... The second part comprises 201 miscellaneous endgame studies by Horwitz ..." Bernhard Horwitz (1807-1885) was a German champion as well as an excellent problem composer and endgame expert. J. Kling (1811-1876) became known as a composer of studies and an endgame theorist. Horwitz and Kling worked together around 1850 and published "Chess Studies" in 1851. In the present edition, which Horwitz published after Kling's death, he included more than 400 jointly developed studies without mentioning Kling's name. Only after Horwitz's death was Kling named as a co-author in the second edition of 1889.
