Alexey Vyzmanavin (1960 – 2000).
Winner of the 30th World Chess Olympiad (1992) as a member of the Russian national team. Two-time Moscow Champion (1984 and 1986). Champion of the USSR Armed Forces (1987). Champion of the Russian SFSR (1989). Participant in the USSR Championships (1984, 1990, 1991) and the All-Union Tournament of Young Masters (1985) — tied for 5th–7th place.
Best results in international competitions: Nałęczów (1986) — 1st place; Moscow (1987, 2nd tournament) — tied for 2nd–3rd places. Winner of the Chigorin Memorial (1989).
He started playing chess relatively late — only at the age of 14 did he join the chess section at the Young Pioneers Stadium. He grew up without his mother and was forced from an early age to look for ways to earn money.
One of the strongest blitz players in Moscow.
Vyzmanavin's early death, aged 40, was officially described as being caused by a heart attack. He lived alone, but had been out with friends in Moscow on 6 January 2000 (the Russian Christmas) and his body was discovered some six days later. There were also reports of poverty and depression. Grandmaster Alexander Baburin believes that there had been serious problems with drinking, which had worsened following the breakdown of his marriage.
