Description

The Series Help‑Mate is a specialist work devoted to series helpmates, a highly technical and artistic genre of chess composition. In a helpmate, both sides cooperate to achieve a checkmate of Black’s king, and in a series helpmate one side (usually Black) makes a whole series of consecutive moves before White replies with a single move that completes the mate. This creates problems that are logical, paradoxical, and often strikingly original, since normal ideas of turns, tempo, and resistance are deliberately suspended.

The book systematically explores this form, presenting composed problems that demonstrate the underlying logic, strategic planning, and aesthetic possibilities of the series helpmate. Rice and Dickins were both respected figures in the British problemist community, and the book reflects the analytical, rule-driven approach typical of mid-20th-century chess composition literature.

Condition: Shows some wear. Some pencilled notes inside.
