This encyclopedic dictionary presents short biographical sketches of 1,356 outstanding Jewish chess players and other personalities such as chess coaches, journalists, historians, organizers etc., from about 50 countries. The list includes Steinitz, Em. Lasker, Botvinnik, Tal, Fischer, Kasparov, Khalifman, Zukertort, Flohr, Nimzowitsch, Reshevsky, Bronstein, Korchnoi, Caruana, Gelfand, Zsuzsa Polgar, Ushenina, Kushnir, Levitina and others.

The book does not contain games, but it provides a large amount of biographical information collected by a team of ten authors over many years; some of these facts are hardly available from other sources. Besides Berdichevsky, the co-authors include, for example, Sergey Voronkov, Yuri Averbakh, I. and V. Linders, and other chess historians and experts.
