Description

AUTHOR: GIACOSA, Giuseppe.

TITLE: Una Partita a Scacchi. Leggenda drammatica in un atto in versi. [Bound with]: Il Trionfo d'Amore.

EDITION: Sesta Edizione (Sixth Edition).

PUBLICATION: Torino: F. Casanova, Editore (Biblioteca Elzeviriana).

DATE: 1878.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:

  • Format: Small octavo ($16\text{mo}$). Printed on fine laid paper (carta vergata).

  • Binding: Contemporary half-calf with marbled boards. The spine features raised bands (fregi) with gilt-lettered titles and decorative gold tooling.

  • Association/Provenance: Exceptional Presentation Copy. Features a prominent, autograph dedication signed by the author on the half-title page: "Al suo carissimo amico... Giuseppe Giacosa".

CONDITION REPORT:

  • Binding (Exterior): The binding is professionally preserved and structurally sound. Significant rubbing and scuffing to the leather at the spine and corners, consistent with age, which lends the volume a genuine "antique" patina. The gilt on the spine remains partially legible.

  • Internal: Light to moderate foxing throughout, as is common for Italian paper of this period. The text block is firm and the internal hinges are secure.

  • Overall: A well-preserved example of 19th-century Italian fine publishing, distinguished by the rare authorial inscription.

HISTORICAL NOTE:

Una Partita a Scacchi is the work that established Giuseppe Giacosa as a leading figure in Italian literature. This specific copy is of high collector interest not only for its chess theme but as a personal artifact from the author—who would later gain worldwide fame as the librettist for Puccini’s greatest operas.
