AUTHOR: BACHMANN, Ludwig. TITLE: Professor Adolph Anderssen: der langjährige Vorkämpfer deutscher Schachmeisterschaft. EDITION: Second enlarged edition (Zweite vermehrte Auflage). PUBLICATION: Ansbach: C. Brügel & Sohn. DATE: 1914.
PROVENANCE & ASSOCIATION:
-
Distinguished Italian Provenance: Inscribed on the flyleaf by Dr. Rolando Rolandi Ricci, dated March 1923. The Rolandi Ricci were a preeminent Italian diplomatic family; Vittorio Rolandi Ricci served as the Italian Ambassador to the United States (1921–1922) and Senator of the Kingdom.
-
Secondary Library Mark: Purple ink ownership stamp of Mario Balducci (Montefalco, Italy) to the preliminary leaf.
CONDITION REPORT:
-
Binding: Original olive-green cloth. The front board exhibits a prominent damp-stain to the lower edge, resulting in some discolouration to the fabric. Despite this, the binding is structurally sound, square, and tight.
-
Internal: Internally very clean; the paper is well-preserved with minimal foxing. The wood-engraved frontispiece of Anderssen remains sharp and bright.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT: This biography by Bachmann is the definitive record of Adolph Anderssen (1818–1879), the "Grandmaster of the Romantic Era." This 1914 edition is the most sought-after by historians as it significantly expanded the game collection and biographical details from the 1902 first edition.
