Greco, Gioachino. Le jeu des eschets, Traduit de l'Italien de Gioachino Greco, Calabrois. A Paris, Chez Jacques le Fabvre, Imprimeur Libraire, rue S. Severin au Soleil d'or. 1713. 10 leaves, 343pp. Brown marbled calfskin from 18th century with rich gilt on spine. Van der Linde I, 363; L/N 402;
This edition contains extensively documented games in the first book, and "Other ways of playing the Gambit" in the second book. Greco was the strongest chess master of the 17th century, born around 1600 in Calabria and died in 1634 in the Antilles. He invented "magnificent" combinations that are still known today (Greco's Sacrifice - Greco's Checkmate). Through faulty play by his opponents, Greco was often able to demonstrate his art. His chess book initially existed only in manuscript form; the first English translation appeared in 1656 and was subsequently printed in many languages over the centuries.
Condition: Brown marbled calfskin from 18th century with rich gilt on spine. VG. From David DeLucia's chess library.
