Philipp Stamma was a well-known Syrian chess master of the 18th century. As early as 1737, he published a collection of endgame studies. His greatest achievement is the invention of a short notation system, which is still used today in a slightly improved form. The present edition contains an introduction to chess and its rules, followed by descriptions of games in various versions.
