Marcus Hieronymus Vida (1548–1566) supported Giovanni de' Medici, the future Pope Leo X, became Bishop of Alba under Clement VII, and was also active as a poet. He devoted himself to Latin poetry and addressed religious themes toward the end of his life. This edition includes, among other works, his chess poem "Scacchia ludus," the "oldest poetic depiction of the new chess" (van der Linde II, 201). Also included are "Christias," a work on the life of Christ with which Vida introduced the religious Neo-Latin Baroque epic; the theoretical treatise on poetry "De arte poetica"; and his poem on silkworm breeding, "De bombyce."
