Description

Huarte, J.  Scrutinium in geniorum…Jenae. Impensis Joh. Ludovici Neuenhahs, Excudebat Samuel Krebs. Anno MDCLXIII (1663). 20 leaves, 743 pages, 24 leaves. van der Linde II, 420 ff.

Juan Huarte de San Juan’s Examen de ingenios para las ciencias, later known in Latin as Scrutinium ingeniorum (including the 1663 edition), is an early work exploring why people differ in intelligence and aptitude. Huarte argues that individuals are born with distinct mental abilities shaped by their physical constitution, especially the brain, and that these differences make them better suited to certain fields than others. Drawing on the medical theories of his time, he connects qualities like memory, imagination, and reasoning to bodily conditions and suggests that education and career choices should align with a person’s natural talents. Although his scientific explanations are outdated, the work is significant for anticipating later ideas about individual differences, psychology, and vocational guidance.
