Description

Cozio, Carlo. Il giuoco degli scacchi, o sia nuova idea d'attacchi, difese, e partiti del Giuoco degli Scacchi. Opera divisa in quattro libri ... Coll'aggiunta in sine d'altre difese scritte dal medesimo Autore dopo la composizione del Libro ... 2 volumes. Turin, Stamperia Reale, 1766. 4 leaves, 357 pages, 2 leaves (Indice), 1 leaf (blank) + Parte Seconda: 382 pages, 2 leaves (Indice), 1 leaf (blank) New red cloth with gilded spine L/N 525. van der Linde II, 412 f. Chicco / Sanvito, Lineamenti ..., 255. Chicco/Porreca, p. 164; Schmid, pp. 152 f. "The author has... from the beginning to the end of his work presented only practical games without annotations. Cozio treats the King's Gambit in particular detail, incorporating all games of this type from the Calabresian; but he has also included some unique innovations not found elsewhere. Cozio has also followed Greco in that he... only uses restricted castling... The number of endgames he has played exceeds 200... Moreover, much in the work is highly commendable, and there are, especially in the openings, some extremely important moves, which, however, usually lead to very unimportant games..." (cf. Bilguer quoted in Schmid). Thus, praise and criticism are evenly balanced in the literature. The Italian Count Carlo Cozio (c. 1715 – c. 1780) was also active as a chess writer and player. Rare edition, as many copies were destroyed in a fire at the Stamperia Reale.

Condition: From David DeLucia's Chess Library.
