Description

"CHESS, Sutton Coldfield. Volume 4" edited by B.H. Wood. Published in light brown hardback with dark brown leather to the spine and raised bands by 'CHESS, Sutton Coldfield' in 1939. 450 large pages. Includes index. Betts 7-91. Di Felice 491. The volume contains all twelve issues of this iconic magazine for the dates of Sept 1938 - August 1939 (Issue Numbers 37 to 48, inclusive). The volume is in Very Good condition for its age. The binding is tight and there is no shelf lean or bowing present. The boards have a couple of tiny dinks to extremities plus light spot staining on both boards (see scan) but are still clean and presentable. The gilt lettering on the spine is still strong. The red marbled page edge blocks are clean, commensurate with age. Internally the volume is in Very Good condition and appears to inscription and annotation free. I have seen a couple of pages that have mild foxing and handling creases but the vast majority of the pages are unaffected. There is a dried liquid stain on the page opposite the first magazine (see 4th scan). No vertical creases from having been in the post. No covers bound in. The January 1939 issue is effectively a booklet dedicated to the recently concluded A.V.R.O. tournament. A lovely vintage 'CHESS' volume for any discerning chess book collector's library. Games are given in English descriptive notation. Condition Rating: 8/10. Games are given in English descriptive notation. Further scanned images are available on request. Postage extra, from either the Republic of Ireland (via 'An Post') or from Northern Ireland (via 'Royal Mail'). Any questions, please just ask.
