Calvo, Ricardo. El Poema Scachs d'Amor. (Siglo XV) Primer SMS conserveado sobre ajedrez moderno. Análisis y comentarios por ... Madrid, Jacque, 1999. 150 pp., 1 p. Original bound.
Rare work by the Spanish chess master, writer, and physician Ricardo Calvo (1943–2002). The poem describes the successive stages of Venus's courtship by Mars, who play a game of chess, in which these two deities are supposedly playing in the presence of Mercury. Francisco de Castellvi takes Mars's side, Narciso Viñoles plays Venus, and Abbot Fenolar plays Mercury. Throughout the poem, Fenolar provides a good deal of information on the rules and etiquette of the game played in Aragon. (See Murray, history of chess p. 781).
