The match between Frank Marshall and José Raúl Capablanca in 1909 was one of the most famous breakthrough matches in chess history. Played across several U.S. cities, it was Capablanca’s first serious match against a top international master. Despite being only 20 years old and largely unknown internationally, Capablanca dominated the reigning U.S. champion Marshall, winning 8 games to 1 with 14 draws. The victory immediately established Capablanca as one of the world’s strongest players and launched the career that would eventually lead him to the world championship in 1921. It also revealed his signature style of simple, precise positional play and exceptional endgame technique.
