 Despite featuring Viktor Korchnoi’s name and annotations, the book was not authorized by him. In 1978—shortly after the book's release—Korchnoi formally wrote to major chess 5magazines to clarify that only his Batsford Press books (Chess is My Life and The King's Gambit) were legitimate English publications. He claimed the Philidor Press volume was a compilation of previously annotated games gathered without his permission and published while he was working on his own authorized best games collection. David Levy and Kevin O'Connell, the directors of Philidor Press, subsequently disputed Korchnoi's assertions in print.
