The Chess Breviary is an introductory book on the game of chess written by Xavier Tartakover, published in 1934, considered a classic of the genre. Tartakover wrote the Breviary in the 1930s, at the end of his best period of activity which earned him the title of international grandmaster when the title was created in 1950.

The book has a strong emphasis on openings, an area in which chess theory has evolved considerably since then; however, the playful tone employed by the author of the Breviary makes this work not only accessible to beginners, but also inimitable and entertaining. It is a piece of French-speaking chess history.

Le Bréviaire des échecs est un livre d'initiation sur le jeu d'échecs écrit par Xavier Tartakover, paru en 1934, considéré comme un classique du genre. Tartakover a rédigé le Bréviaire dans les années 1930, à l'issue de sa meilleure période d'activité qui lui a valu d'être nommé grand maître international lors de la création du titre en 1950.

Le livre présente un fort accent sur les ouvertures, domaine dans lequel la théorie échiquéenne a beaucoup évolué depuis ; cependant, le ton enjoué employé par l'auteur du Bréviaire rend cet ouvrage non seulement accessible aux joueurs débutants, mais aussi inimitable et distrayant. C'est un pan de l'histoire échiquéenne francophone.
