This is a facsimile edition of the original work published in 1914. The book contains 100 main chess problems (mate in 2, 3, 4 or more moves) and for each of them two others inspired by the main.

Alain Campbell White was a scholar, philanthropist and the foremost American authority on chess problems. He was born in Cannes, France in 1880. He graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude in 1902. From 1905 to 1936, White published annually a book on chess which he sent to chess enthusiasts throughout the world at Christmas time. A student of Dante, he won the Latham Prize of the American Dante Society while still an undergraduate, and collaborated on two concordances of the minor works of the poet. Alain Campbell White died in April, 1951 in Summerville, South Carolina, where he spent his winters.
