This book is a historical chess textbook written by the British chess player and author William Cook (1851–1917) and first published in 1902 in Bristol. It was one of the most pioneering and popular textbooks on chess openings in the early 20th century. Unlike older theoretical books, the opening variations were based on and referenced real games that had been played at the top level, making it extremely practical. William Cook was a well-known figure in the chess community of Great Britain during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
