"The Hypermodern Chess Game" is a legendary chess textbook by Grandmaster Dr. Savielly Tartakower, first published in Vienna in 1924. It is considered one of the most important literary works in chess history, as it summarized and analyzed the revolutionary ideas of the Hypermodern School of chess.
Until the First World War, the classical doctrine of Siegbert Tarrasch dominated. This doctrine stated that the center must be occupied with one's own pawns in the opening. The hypermodernists (above all Richard Réti, Aron Nimzowitsch, and Gyula Breyer) broke with this dogma: Center control instead of occupation: The center is not occupied with pawns, but controlled from afar with pieces (usually by fianchettoed bishops on g2/b2 or g7/b7).
Tartakower was himself a world-class player, but he is best remembered as a brilliant chess writer. In his book, he documented the historical evolution of chess strategy in real time. It is not a dry theory book, but remains a popular read for chess enthusiasts
