The "Textbook of Chess" was first published in 1881 as an edition of the Universal Library of the Philipp Reclam Jr. publishing house. The volume's portability and value for money contributed greatly to its popularity. Its author was the respected chess master and writer Jean Dufresne.
The book's structure has remained unchanged to this day. The first part is an easily understandable, detailed explanation of the basic rules of the game. In the main part, the reader will find a clever introduction to the theory of chess openings and a concise, expert compilation of the most important variations of each opening. Brilliant master games rich in combinations teach about their practical application.
The third section is devoted to the final phase of the game, the endgame, in which the decision must be made. When there is only little material left, the outcome of the game can be determined more clearly than in the opening and middle game. Many constellations have been reliably researched theoretically. This is the stage for the experienced chess virtuoso. Anyone who wants to be successful in chess must be well versed in this area in particular. The basics can be found in this book. The first six editions were edited by Dufresne himself, who died in 1893.
