Madrid 1973 was one of the greatest tournaments ever held in Spain.
Logically, the names of Karpov and Madrid became inextricably linked thanks to this tournament, and the victory of the future world champion helped to forge the legend of the tournament, which also featured ten other players ranked among the world's top 50, such as Portisch, Hort, Panno, Ljubojevic, Uhlmann, Andersson, Tukmakov, Furman, Browne.
Madrid I.C.T. 1973 was held between November 26 and December 15 at the Castellana Hotel, one of the best hotels in the capital.
At the end of the tournament, the 1973 Chess Oscars were awarded to Anatoly Karpov, 22 years old.
