The design of this ex libris is deeply rooted in the iconography of the city of Munich, the home of the BSB. The 'Münchner Kindl': In the heart of the shield (the escutcheon) is depicted the official city coat of arms of Munich: the monk with outstretched arms. Bavarian diamonds: The background of the shield is filled with the characteristic white-blue diamond pattern (here in black and white) of Bavarian heraldry. The Queen: On the right stands a royal figure symbolising both the chess queen and the historical Bavarian monarchy. The ex libris shown is therefore a registered piece of Munich cultural history that is catalogued and preserved by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek to document the heritage of the early German chess clubs.
Size: 9 x 10.7 cm.
