Description

This is a historical ex libris ("from the books of") from 1914 of the Stockholms Schacksällskap, designed by artist John Bunge. It depicts a stylised king on a chessboard pattern, along with the coat of arms of the chess club, which was founded in 1879.

Design:
The design is signed in the bottom right with "John Bunge 1914". Bunge was a Swedish artist and designer who created this exclusive trademark for the club's library at the time.

Symbolism:
The central figure is a stately chess king with a crown, sceptre, and orb, modelled after a medieval monarch. He stands in front of a two-colour chessboard pattern executed in black and gold.

Club crest:
In the bottom left, you can see the official coat of arms of the association, which also incorporates a chessboard pattern.
