Karel Falleyn (March 24, 1931 – October 4, 2008) was a prominent Flemish collector, publisher, and expert in the field of chess ex-libris.
He lived in Blankenberge and dedicated a large part of his life to documenting this specific form of small-scale graphic art.
Falleyn enjoyed international fame as the publisher and compiler of the Chess Ex Libris Catalogue. This is a globally used reference work in which thousands of ex-libris with a chess theme have been meticulously catalogued.
Collector: He personally built up one of the most extensive collections of chess ex-libris in the world.
Commissions to artists: Falleyn commissioned renowned graphic artists worldwide to design ex-libris for him. The artwork shown (number 233 in his collection) is a direct example of this. Symbolism on his ex-libris
The elements on the print shown reflect his passions:
Chess pieces: The two crowned female figures (the white and the black queen) form the base of the chess pieces.
Gens una sumus: The official Latin motto of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), which means "We are one family".
Books: The figures are holding books and magazines, which refer to his library, collecting, and his cataloguing work.
Size: 8.9 x 12.7 cm.
